Abstract

The transport industry is witnessing enormous technological developments aiming the population travelling in a fast, safe and environmentally responsible way. The progress that has been seen is related to a large extent to lighter and more resistant new materials that have been developed. In this sense, the world market for these materials is expected to increase significantly during the next years, due to demographic, economic and environmental reasons. The use of carbon fiber and polymer composites (e.g. epoxy resins), although show some technological limitations, has permitted to achieve significant mechanical performances as well as different functionalities.

This project aims the development of a new technology that involves the use of a natural based unsaturated polyester resin, whose chemical structure will allow a significant improvement of the polymer compatibility with the carbon fibers’ structure. This way it will be possible to offer the market a new material with the following characteristics: high renewable content; more favorable processing conditions; smaller costs; adjusted mechanical properties through the control of the polyester structure and the use of fillers; better visual properties concerning color and homogeneity.

Currently there is no solution in the market that can compete with the composite material to be developed, in what a quality/price relationship is concerned. The new material will also expand the market for this type of composites in applications where carbon fiber / epoxy resins composites show prohibitive costs.

The research teams of this project have a history of previous partnership with high success that recently resulted in the development of new unsaturated polyester resins, within a QREN project. These resins are already being presented to the market.
